Tourist brochures making way to online multimedia
Wednesday 27 September 2006 by Edward.
Global competition for tourists demands increasingly engaging websites. High quality video clips, such as those I reported from TurnHere, lead the way. Here are some destinations leading the way with multimedia presentations:
Tourism Massachusetts video and slide mix
Aspen, Colrado panoramic photo and map tour
New York City 24-hour video journey
Florida Keys destination videos
The China Experience
Send me links to some sites that explore the boundaries of multimedia tourism online.

TurnHere for Tourism on Google Earth
Sunday 17 September 2006 by Edward.
Google and TurnHere.com have partnered to place tourist video links on GoogleEarth.
I was impressed with TurnHere videos when I featured Davis Square, in Somerville, Massachusetts, a few weeks ago. Today I clicked on Google Earth’s TurnHere film icons for St. Henri, Montréal and was equally impressed with the earthy feel of the presentation. Well others also seem impressed. InterContinental Hotels has turned to TurnHere to create short films about each of the hotel’s 140 worldwide locations.
Rule 15 “The Rule of Supporting Businesses”, in the book ‘The 25 Immutable Rules of Successful Tourism’ by Roger A. Brooks and Maury Forman, shows how ‘Movie credits tell the real story.’ Brooks writes “In successful tourism, there is never only one business holding up the entire industry.” What can one say about multiple movies about multiple cities at one location? One great stop for the armchair tourist!

Count calories, steps and beats with the W710i
Thursday 24 August 2006 by Edward.
![]()
Imagine counting steps, counting calories, watching time and listening to your portable radio — at the same time and all in the same unit. The Sony-Ericsson W710i comes with cell phone, pedometer, radio and digital camera. The unit can count your steps and measure distance and running/walking speed. Cost is US$270.00. for the 30Gb unit. It can store 7500 songs (MP3, WAV and WMA) and video (MPEG-4).
This would be a great gadget for the active tourist.

Tourist photos. OK in Saudi Arabia. Not OK in Australia?
Saturday 19 August 2006 by Edward.
The UK Guardian Unlimited reports that “Saudi Arabia has lifted a ban on photography in public areas as part of an effort to attract more visitors.” Certain restrictions remain.

Meanwhile, Australia is starting to selectively ban public photography. The Herald Sun recently reports that tourists were asked by security to delete images taken with their cameras in Melbourne’s Yarra River retail and dining centre, a popular tourist destination. ABC southwest Victoria reports on a ban on Geelong camera club members from taking photos near the oil refinery. The Victorian Law Reform Commission is reviewing public-place photo bans and is inviting comments as part of their review.
Rule 21 “The Rule of ‘wow’ Photography”, in the book ‘The 25 Immutable Rules of Successful Tourism’ by Roger A. Brooks and Maury Forman, states that ‘Photos are worth a thousand nights’. Nothing sells tourism as well as photography. Enough said.

Toronto audio tour with City Surf
Wednesday 16 August 2006 by Edward.
City walking tours are about to change. City Surf provides self-guided audio walking tours of Toronto via the MP3 player. While you explore Toronto you listen to the audio tour and maybe find hidden treasures and get first-hand knowledge of the city’s local culture.
Several audio tours are currently offered: Flatiron Building, Philosopher’s Walk, Reservoir Lounge, The Annex, St. Lawrence Market, and Yorkville. Tours are being developed for Montreal and Vancouver. They are put together by writing and research staff, tips from friends who live in the area, people interviewed in the area, and recorded and produced by locals.
At about 30-40 minutes and C$9.00 per tour, with map, the city traveller just might learn a little more about Toronto with this companion.
Rule 16 “The Rule of Telling Stories”, in the book ‘The 25 Immutable Rules of Successful Tourism’ by Roger A. Brooks and Maury Forman, states that ‘Great stories make the campfire memorable’. Whether by word-of-mouth or via iPOD, the story sells the destination and unearths the nooks and crannies of the world. Great stories develop great bonds with the local community.

Davis Square, Somerville, Massachusetts
Saturday 5 August 2006 by Edward.
This video is about one intersection in the USA — Davis Square, Somerville, Massachusetts.
What can one say in a 3-minute clip about one intersection? To all you travel videographers and marketers: take note, this is one great short!
I’ve seen lots of travel destination multimedia and presentations on the web. This one struck a chord. The mood is bouyant, inspirational, and earthy. I can tell the people loved living here. Next time I’m within a 100km of Somerville, I’m going to Davis Square — just for the coffee, alone. I promise.
Roger A. Brooks Rule 16 “The Rule of Telling Stories” tells us that ‘Great stories make the campfire memorable.’ No matter how small or insignificant your destination may appear to be, a great story sells the destination. Stories entertain and teach, says Brooks. They also bring visitors into a community.

Picasa update
Sunday 30 July 2006 by Edward.
![]()
Google offers a beta test for Picasa Web Album, a facility to download and geolocate images. You can add captions, post and view comments, and organize photos online. Picasa allows you to upload, and download back to your computer. Here is a sample to a public album posted by Noel Jenkins, and how it appears on Google Earth.
Now here’s a useful tool. You can subscribe to Noel Jenkins’ album via an RSS feed. Every time the album is updated a notice would go out automatically to all subscribers.
Roger A. Brooks Rule 25 “The Rule of frequency” states that ‘Repetition gets results, repetition gets result.’ Did you get that? Repetition gets results. This is the key to getting people to visit your website. Be consistent. Send out that website newsletter or that update notice.

Sunday 23 July 2006 by Edward.

Whether you go backpacking, surfing, cycling or snorkelling, this wrist-strapped camera (waterproof to about 20m) may be a great companion. GoPro sells this Digital Hero” camera for US$79.95.

Roger A. Brooks Rule 21 “The Rule of ‘wow’ photography” states that ‘Photos are worth a thousand nights.’ Nothing sells tourism like great photography. Always have a camera ready. When you use photos, make sure you pick the best.

Fix photos, audio, drawings, and more, to a geographic point.
Saturday 15 July 2006 by Edward.
RoboGeo creates a product to “geo-reference” (latitude, longitude, altitude) and “date/time-stamp” your photos, allowing you to retrace your steps, and export them onto Google Map or onto Google Earth. RoboGEO does this without requiring a wire connection between your camera and your GPS. The new version 4.2 does more. You can now associate any file with the photos you took, such as audio and drawings, and GPS tracklogs. Imagine touring southern France meeting and recording conversations with people or local music, taking photos and creating some watercolour sketches. You can now assemble a geographic travelogue of your trip, display tour guide routes on your website, or simply share photos with others.
Roger A. Brooks‘ Rule 6 “The Rule of Wayfinding” theorizes that ‘Real men don’t ask for directions.’ The journeys our early explorers took were difficult undertakings. These days, says Brooks, (most) tourists are not looking for that type of challenge.
